Update on Buddy, our Olde English Bulldogge

On February 12 we came home to find Buddy in his kennel, sitting there--when he usually greets us--and he was all wet, not from the rain but he had peed on himself, which he has NEVER done. He was very quiet and just had the saddest look on his face ever. His breathing kind of scared us, it was very slow and he would not get up, he would just lay there, even for food or when we called.

I brought Zayden inside because I didn't want to have him see Buddy like that. When we got inside, he must have heard me and daddy talking because he said to me "mommy, buddy SAD in garage."...OMG! I cried. I put him to bed and daddy came and got me and told me Buddy didn't look too good and he would keep watch on him in the kennel. We couldn't bring him in because he was urinating on himself a lot. We tried to figure out the whole night what was wrong, he still did not eat but he kept drinking! Daddy stayed by him, and I made some phone calls to friends to help us out to see what was wrong. Thanks to Nina Janine and Auntie Camilla's help, they helped me brainstorm and we decided to bring him to the vet in the AM--IF he would make it....seriously with his breathing, me and daddy thought FOR SURE he was going to pass soon.

Buddy is 6 years old, with his breed, they live 8 to 10 years. So we thought maybe it was his time. When the morning came, we realized when he got up, his whole elbow was swollen on the right side!! So we thought, okay let's get him to the vet and get an xray, he probably injured it in the backyard while we were away which is why he is acting like he is!

Long story short--we get to the vet, we have gone to this vet
since he was a baby, and hundreds of dollars later...still no definitive diagnosis. The stupid ass vet was concentrating on his elbow and if it was something surgical versus seeing if there was a cause to the injury. He charged us for 3 xrays which he still could not get a good pic of the elbow! GRRRRRR!!!!

Now it is 5 days later....Buddy is eating and drinking more, he is on antibiotics and pain medications for the elbow. Turns out his urine showed an infection, which is why he wet himself and probably hurt himself running in the back to try to pee! I wish I had a doggie cam.

Moral of the story is (well there is more than one of course):

  • love your doggie each day, they may not be here tomorrow
  • get good pet insurance! we have it, so will get some moula back.
  • make sure you have a vet that loves your dog as much as you do--we are going to get a new one after all that has happened with buddy
***I spoke with a lot of people after this has happened, and really as the owner, you should always go with your gut, you know your dog the best. Daddy and I are both in the medical field and all that knowledge went out the window when it came to what happened with Buddy. Its always nice to hear the stories of others so leave a comment if you have one. My coworker Georgia told me she spent thousands on her dog after listening to all the vets promises to cure her dog. And he died anyways. Make sure you get all the answers you need, and if you don't get them from the vet, find someone who will, and who will love your dog and has the best intentions--just as you do.
